Who We’re Looking For

The Rios Group, Inc (TRG) is looking for an Engineer-in-Training (EIT) to join our dynamic team of leading experts in the field of Subsurface Utility Engineering and Utility Coordination. This position reports directly to the Branch Manager, and will work in parallel with the engineering team, providing a great opportunity for career development and experience.

What You’ll Do

The EIT will apply basic engineering principles, under the direction of a Professional Engineer, to project assignments. The EIT will become familiar with methods, practices, and procedures of the firm to provide Subsurface Utility Engineering (SUE) services to public and private clients. You will work as a salaried, exempt from overtime employee, which may require working more than 40 hours per week in times of high demand.

While at work you’ll be responsible for the following:

  • Assisting Professional Engineer/Project Manager on specific and broad assignments.
  • Applying standard practices and techniques in specific situations.
  • Analyzing data by collecting, adjusting, and correlating to identify discrepancies within results.
  • Performing project assignments within the scope of work and guidelines defined by the Project Manager, and within the time and schedule allocations provided. These assignments will include, but are not limited to: Obtaining permits as needed for project executions; Preparing engineering documents using AutoCAD and/or Microstation software platforms; Reviewing and processing field data on assigned projects; Performing quantity take offs and assisting in development of client proposals; Preparing drawings for exhibits and reports; Preparing and assembling project deliverable packages; Contacting local, state and federal agencies and client personnel to request and check data, reports, and other material,
  • Communicating clearly with other company personnel, including Project Managers, Field Staff, and Clients
  • Being punctual, with a driven work ethic

What You’ll Need

  • Education (Minimum) - B.S. degree in Civil Engineering
  • Certification – EIT in Texas or ability to obtain within 6 months, ability to obtain TX PE license within 3 years
  • Minimum previous Engineering experience required, however internships with Engineering firm a plus
  • Mastery of MS Office products, i.e.: MS Word, MS Excel, and MS Outlook
  • Proficiency of AutoCAD and/or MicroStation is required
  • Must pass pre-employment drug & alcohol screenings
  • Must be authorized to work in the United States

Minimum Physical Requirement of this Job:

  • Prolonged periods sitting at a desk and working on a computer
  • Must be able to visit project sites as necessary for troubleshooting and to ensure engineering quality

SUE Technician I - Fort Worth, San Antonio, Round Rock & Houston, Texas

Job Summary

A SUE Technician I will work as a field crew member, performing vacuum excavation of underground utilities. This position reports to the area's field manger. This position is an hourly, non-exempt from overtime position and may require working more than 40 hours per week. This is a labor-intensive position requiring strenuous physical exertion.

Additional Details

Essential Job Functions

  • Safely operate vacuum excavation equipment, mounted to a large truck or trailer, to uncover underground utilities
  • Safely operate tools and equipment such as a jackhammer, pogo-tamper, concrete saw, compressor blower, vacuum hose, air lance and hand tools. This list is not all inclusive
  • Accurately and legibly complete required paperwork, including record keeping
  • Perform simple mathematics for purposes of record keeping
  • Set up maintenance of traffic as instructed
  • Take basic field measurements as instructed
  • Perform geophysical prospecting as instructed
  • Maintain vehicles, equipment, and worksites in a safe and clean condition
  • Travel throughout the state of Texas, working and staying overnight as needed at project locations, with the possibility of being out of town for up to two weeks at a time
  • Safely operate/drive a company vehicle, with or without a trailer hooked-up
  • Maintain company vehicles and track all related purchases and services related to vehicles
  • Communicate clearly and work cooperatively with coworkers in the field, Project Managers, and Leadership via telephone, text and email
  • Report to work on-time

Qualifications

  • Must have a clean driving record, and a valid Texas driver’s license
  • Must pass pre-employment drug & alcohol screenings, and random screenings thereafter
  • Must be authorized to work in the United States

Minimum Physical Requirements

  • Must be able to safely lift up to 75 pounds
  • Must be able to safely stand for up to 10 hours
  • Must be able to safely work outdoors, regardless of temperature (hot or cold)
  • Must be able to safely operate a motor vehicle

SUE Technician IV – Lead Designator - San Antonio, and Fort Worth, Texas

Job Summary

A SUE Technician IV, Lead Utility Designator will work as a lead field crew member, employing various types of geophysical equipment to identify and mark underground utilities, and document findings through field sketches. The SUE Technician IV, Lead Utility Designator will also provide daily field crew supervision as assigned. This position is an hourly, non-exempt from overtime position, and may require working more than 40 hours per week.

Essential Job Functions

  • Able to read and understand utility records and as-builts
  • Able to designate (MARK IN THE FIELD) various utilities (including electric, telephone, water, fiber, gas, sanitary sewer & storm drain) utilizing locating equipment and protocol
  • Able to produce high quality sketches of utilities and job site, using DesignCAD software
  • Able to work in Excel and Google Earth
  • Ability to coordinate with utility owner representatives in the field environment
  • Thorough understanding project budgets and scope, and ability to adhere to schedules
  • Thorough understanding of traffic control procedures
  • Thorough understanding of confined space safety protocol and procedures
  • Able to work throughout the state of Texas, staying overnight as needed at project locations, with the possibility of being out of town for up to two weeks at a time.
  • Able to drive a company vehicle utilizing your Class A Texas Driver’s License.

Additional Job Duties

  • May on occasion or regular basis supervise SUE Tech I, II, and/or III associates in all daily crew activities
  • May use Ground Penetrating Radar (GPR) equipment
  • Familiarity with Vacuum Excavation equipment and procedures.  Ability to layout test hole locations and lead vac truck crew

Qualifications

  • Minimum 5 years of experience as a Subsurface Utility Engineering technician or 5 years in the successful application of geophysical equipment in utility locating such as for a contract utility locating firm or a major utility company.
  • Must have a clean driving record, and a valid Texas driver's license
  • Must pass pre-employment drug & alcohol screenings, and random screenings thereafter
  • Must be authorized to work in the United States

Project Manager - Professional Engineer - Dallas, Round Rock, San Antonio, & Fort Worth, Texas

Summary

The Project Manager/Professional Engineer (PM/PE) manages all aspects of his/her assigned public and private civil SUE projects, including field work, deliverables and client communication, under the direction of the Branch Manager. The PM/PE has a thorough knowledge of the methods, practices, and procedures to provide Subsurface Utility Engineering (SUE) services. The PM/PE operates under a certain degree of autonomy using the staff and resources allocated to them to provide top quality service to the client while meeting profitability goals. The PM/PE position is a salaried, exempt from overtime position, and may require working more than 40 hours per week.

  • Able to apply ASCE standard Civil Engineering practices to assigned SUE projects.
  • Able to perform project assignments within the scope of work and guidelines defined, within the time and schedule allocations provided. These assignments will include, but are not limited to:
    • Preparing client proposals and estimates
    • Coordinating permits as needed for project execution
    • Contacting local, state and federal agencies and client personnel to request and check data, reports, and other material, as needed
    • Reviewing and processing field data on assigned projects, recognizing discrepancies in results.
    • Preparing engineering documents using AutoCAD and/or Microstation software platforms, and assembling project deliverable packages
    • Reviewing invoices and preparing/reviewing progress reports to client
  • Able to QA/QC deliverables of peer PM’s
  • Able to communicate clearly with other company personnel, including other Project Managers, Field Staff, Administration, and Leadership via telephone, text and email.
  • Able to communicate clearly with client personnel and subconsultants via telephone, text and email
  • Able to represent the firm at client meetings in a professional manner
  • Able to report to work on-time

Additional Job Duties (If Applicable)

  • Actively participates in at least one professional organization.

Qualifications

  • Education (Minimum) - B.S. degree in Civil Engineering
  • Certification – A Professional Engineer (PE), Civil, in Texas 
  • Previous Engineering experience in SUE highly preferred, Minimum of 2-3 years of experience in related Civil Engineering field required
  • Previous experience in Utility Coordination a plus, but not required
  • Mastery of MS Office products, i.e.:  MS Word, MS Excel, and MS Outlook
  • Proficient knowledge of AutoCAD and/or MicroStation is a plus
  • Proficient technical writing skills
  • Must pass pre-employment drug & alcohol screenings
  • Must be authorized to work in the United States

Minimum Physical Requirements

  • Sit for up to 8 hours
  • May be required to go out to job site, walking long distances
  • Able to tolerate stress during peak work hours
